COLONIAL THEATRE

Pittsfield, MA

NEEDS ASSESSMENT, PROGRAM PROPOSAL

AND IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY

The Colonial Theatre is a 1903 purpose-built theatre facility in downtown Pittsfield, MA, which currently houses an art supply store. It was a highlight of First Lady Hilary Clinton’s "Save America’s Treasures" tour in July of 1998. The Colonial Theatre is located in the heart of the Berkshires, one of North America's prime culture and arts resorts.

In August 1998, Janis Barlow and Rebecca Cann were retained to provide a Needs Assessment, Program Proposal and Implementation Strategy for the Colonial Theatre. Extensive interviews with community groups and individuals were undertaken, research was developed, gathered and analyzed, and key issues were addressed with a variety of community groups.

The Colonial Theatre report addresses: a vision and mission for the theatre; market assessment and community needs analysis; ownership, governance and management of the facility; comparative case studies and operating budget analysis; and the next steps in the project development.
