After an initial
development plan failed, Janis Barlow was retained in 1990 to advise on the
planning and project management of this $7.6 million project to restore the
900-seat Carolina Theatre, and add new lobbies, backstage facilities and two
cinemas.
Janis Barlow worked with a complex client group, which included City and County
governments and a community advisory group to re-define goals, objectives and
conditions. She prepared a building program, advised on architectural terms of
reference and a selection process, and provided a project management plan which
included fully integrated schedules for planning, construction and operational
requirements.
In the auditorium, the original 1927 Beaux-Arts finishes had been altered and
obscured by drop ceilings, curtains and drab painting. Janis Barlow recommended
and facilitated an historic finish analysis that was instrumental in driving the
project forward and inspiring donor participation.
